I photograph what people make and where they gather, in soft light and without rushing anyone.

“…always has some kind of comment to get a laugh or a smile for the perfect picture. … she also does an amazing job capturing the little things.”
“[Alex’s] photography speaks for itself but her professionalism and kindness is what makes her next level.”
“Alex is so fun to work with and extremely talented!”
Chapter I1 of 7
Brand and small-business stories
I spend a day inside a business and come back with its whole story, from the team at work to the small details on the counter.
Teams and makers in the Netherlands, small businesses in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the portraits that go with them.
“I needed some professional photos for my freelance graphic design work, and I’m thrilled with the results!”
01 Energiso
An energy consultancy’s team, up on the roof and down in the boiler room.
I photographed the Energiso team at work and in portraits. Out of 753 frames I delivered 468 full-size photos.
I showed them 2 edits, a warm one and a cooler one in their brand teal, and they picked the warm one. Their homepage runs on these photos now.

“…our photographer of the day, for the fantastic photos and cozy atmosphere!”
02 PawsOnTheGo
8 travel mats for dogs, shown the way people actually use them.
Robert and Emma had a good product and 8 patterns, but no photos that showed what the mats could do. My job was to show them in action and make the features obvious at a glance: how light they are, how small they roll up, the 8 patterns and the water-resistant fabric.
So the mats went everywhere. Rolled on a sheepskin, carried by the handle, pegged to a clothesline by the canal, and under a very patient dachshund on the grass. Robert, Emma and their dog got a few portraits on the side, just for them.

Then I turned the photos into feature boards for their shop and socials
In Dutch, for Dutch dog owners
Robert and the mascotA letter from the client
For my company PawsOnTheGo, I was looking for a photographer who could capture our products in a beautiful and professional way. Through a friend of a friend I got in touch with Alex. Although her experience was mainly in portrait photography, she was enthusiastic about taking on product photography too.
The result truly exceeded my expectations! Alex made beautiful photos of the products on their own, together, and in different creative styles.
What I found especially pleasant throughout the whole process was how proactive, creative and engaged Alex was. She came up with fun ideas right away for how to present our products at their best. The end result turned out great!
On top of that, Alex also took some lovely portrait photos of my girlfriend, our dog and me. That was a really fun extra, and those photos turned out beautifully too.
I’m more than happy with the end result and would definitely recommend Alex to anyone looking for a creative, enthusiastic and engaged photographer.
03 Sommers Night Pottery
I photographed my sister’s pottery, then built the website it lives on.
My sister Abby makes the mugs. I shot them outside on the same scrap of lace, one after another, and lined every frame up so the collection reads as one set.
Then I built her website, sommersnightpottery.com, from concept to launch, working from the logo and color palette our sister Avery designed. These photos run its homepage and most of the shop gallery.
The last frames are from the wall of 206 mugs Abby made for our sister Avery’s wedding, one for every guest to take home.

“Working with Alex is always a lot of fun. She brings so much energy to every shoot, whether it’s pottery or family, and her candid photos capture the energy and the vision really well. Having every single mug from Avery’s wedding photographed meant I could go back, actually see everything I made, and share it with so many people, and I’ve gotten a lot of compliments. It’s a lovely gift to look back on, and a business tool that shows what I’m capable of. None of that would have been possible without her photographs and her expertise in how to capture the whimsy.”
04 Tall Pines
A northwoods general store and the 2 people who kept it running.
Steve and Vinnie ran Tall Pines in Amasa, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, for years: gas and propane, rooms upstairs, camp supplies, groceries, coffee and ice cream, all under one roof. This was their retirement shoot, a record of the place and the everyday work.
It ends where they are now, with more time for the UP’s woods and life on the lake.
05 White Water Associates
A water-testing lab in the woods, with an office dog and a very relaxed bear.
White Water Associates tests water in Amasa, Michigan, and makes sure it’s safe for the community. I photographed the team at work, from the sign out front to the lab bench and the desks.
I edited the whole set in black and white so the people carry it.
06 Sommers Sausage Shop
Behind the counter at a butcher shop, for a full brand refresh.
Sommers Sausage Shop has processed wild game and done custom butchering in Crystal Falls, Michigan, since 1992. We gave them a full branding facelift and rebuilt their website around these photos.
The brief was to show what goes into their products behind the scenes, and what you can expect when you walk in to shop.
“She listened to what I was saying and implemented it to design. … It was almost like she could see my vision for the website, put her spin on it and there it was in front of everyone to see. I needed some add on’s after we finished and they were added within 24 hours (more like 10 minutes).”
“We wanted something professional, looked updated but not the run of the mill “look” and it is a hard business to showcase, it’s a mom and pop meat processing business. I love the pictures it made it feel like us. Loved the work and was so impressed with the quality of the website. We have gotten so many compliments since it was up.”

Events and portraits
People doing the thing they love, photographed while they’re doing it.
In summer 2023 Eetcafé De Winze in Wyns asked me to photograph a free concert in their summer series, sung by 2 choirs from the little yellow ferry. They wanted the café in the photos too, so between songs I went looking for the gezellig corners and the dessert table.
The rest come from portrait sessions in my Green Bay years: Megan’s yoga brand photos by the lake, and a taekwondo black belt out in the woods and the water.

RoHaus Universe
RoHaus & Co. is the business I co-founded. My photos go into everything we make: analog things that are cozy for yourself and for your community.
Paper Trails puts them on the fronts of conversation cards, and Cozy Corner Post, our snail-mail club, sends them through the letterbox.
08 Paper Trails
A conversation card game, photographed where it gets played, on a table or by the water.
Paper Trails is the deck of travel questions I make at RoHaus & Co. The loop up top is the opening of our Kickstarter film, “We forgot how to be curious”. It’s about how, somewhere between the scrolling and the notifications, we stopped asking each other real questions.
These photos are for the shop and the Kickstarter page. Most are playtests, with players laughing over a card on a sunny afternoon and the Inqubator crowd at the city beach in Leeuwarden. A few show the making of it, from cut-up travel photos to the finished tin.
And a black cat, who decided the cards were hers.
09 Cozy Corner Post
The club’s printed cards, shot by hand and cut into stop-motion.
Cozy Corner Post is the snail-mail club I run at RoHaus & Co. A printed card lands in your letterbox every month, and these photos show people what’s coming before it arrives.

Chapter IV4 of 7
Love stories: weddings and couples
Courthouse vows in February, 2 brides in a fall garden, a red barn, an engagement on a dock and a stop at Lambeau Field.
I try to hold the feeling of the day and the place it happened in the same frame.
“AEJ Photography did our engagement photos and they turned out so beautifully! … She listens to what you want and adds creative ideas during every shot!”
Chapter V5 of 7
Families and milestones
For 14 years in Green Bay I photographed families through their big moments, from maternity and newborn sessions to first birthdays and 20-person reunions.
Families liked that I’m good with big groups and small kids.
“She is always timely, is fantastic at handling large groups (from reunions to weddings) and is extremely personable.”
“She was patient and creative in getting my kids to cooperate! … Her warm spirit and unique perspective comes through in her exceptional work.”
“She is the child whisperer and seriously is so talented!”
“She made me feel so comfortable, empowered and beautiful during a photoshoot with my newborn.”
“Childhood may be fleeting but [Alex’s] work brings me comfort, because I know I have images that illustrate my family exactly how it is in real life.”
Chapter VI6 of 7
Women’s empowerment
Sessions for women, trans women included, who want to see themselves the way they feel on a good day.
“She took some amazing boudoir photos of me that made me view myself in a whole new light.”
12 Alter ego
From a flower crown in a summer field to lace and red ribbon.
Portrait and boudoir sessions from my Green Bay years. Every woman here said yes to sharing these.
In the boudoir frames, faces stay hidden: turned away, out of frame or behind lace. The full sessions stay private, and I’m happy to show you more on a call.
Portraits and boudoir · faces hidden
I’ll send you the full set once you tell me who you are and that you’re planning a boudoir session. It keeps my clients’ photos private.

Travel
Far away and close to home. I walk slowly and photograph what I’d want to remember, like a red train in a Tunisian canyon or a washing line by a Frisian canal.
13 The long way
Travel frames from the long way round.
From Nyhavn in Copenhagen to the Grand Canyon, with a red train through a Tunisian canyon and a street artist drawing at night along the way. Some of my travel photos ended up on the fronts of Paper Trails cards.
14 Friesland: Close to home
Friesland, a few streets and harbours from my desk.
A Saturday of city-hopping across Friesland, from windmills and washing lines to little harbour towns, mixed in with a harbour festival full of tall ships.
Up top, a canal boat ducks under a bridge, then the Dutch flag flies over the quay.
